Glazing oil has the distinction of glazing, toning, isolating and matte in terms of its function. In terms of materials, it is divided into natural, synthetic and waxy types. Different kinds of glazing oils have different uses.
(1) Natural soft resin polishing oil
Natural soft resin glazing oil applied to the finished and dry surface of the work will form a glossy, tough transparent film, which can not only prevent dust pollution, moisture erosion, but also protect the coloring layer, so that the picture can maintain a long-term aesthetic.
① Dama resin glazing oil: It is a better multi-purpose natural resin glazing oil, drying speed, thin coating can be. This polishing oil can clean and renew the oil film that has become brittle over time on the surface of oil paintings. At present, there are two kinds on the market: (1∶3) Damar polishing oil for painting polishing; (1∶2) Damar polishing oil can be prepared emulsion matte toner, toner oil and Tampera emulsion.

② Mati (frankincense) resin glazing oil: It is a more commonly used glazing oil in the century, which can bring a high-gloss golden surface to the picture, especially suitable for classical oil painting. Its golden color gives the coloring layer an antique effect. It is an ideal glazing material for restoring ancient paintings.
(2) Natural hard resin polishing oil
Natural hard resin has been used as painting varnish in the century, because the conjunctiva is extremely hard, irreversible, and difficult to make, it is rarely used today, but its toughness and insolubility account for a certain potential in the color medium. At present, there are two kinds of hard resin polishing oil, coba resin and amber, on the foreign art supplies market.
① Coba resin polishing oil: directly into the oil paint to use, the color will be more smooth, bright, smooth picture, quick drying, no deformation, oil film issued attractive luster.
Amber polishing oil: amber is known to be relatively hard natural resin, copper and gold. Amber glazing oil is a powerful glazing oil, used as a color medium, it will make the colored layer shine and produce the luster of the enamel. The early Netherland miniatures had jewel-like sacredness due to the use of thin amber polishing oil. Nowadays, it is rarely seen in the foreign art supply market, its price is expensive, and it is generally only used as an additive for other toning liquid or polishing oil.
(3) Synthetic resin polishing oil
Synthetic resin invented in the century is a new painting material. Compared with traditional resin glazing oil, synthetic resin glazing oil will not hair for a long time, nor will it become hard and brittle, and has all the advantages of basic resin glazing oil. Some new synthetic glazing oils contain UV-resistant materials that provide protection to the color layer of the picture to prevent fading, thereby extending the life of the color layer. At present, the synthetic glazing oils used for painting are: alkyd resin series, acrylic resin series and ketone resin glazing oil. Some are already available in China, but there are no domestic brands.
(4) Polishing (correction) polishing oil
Modified glazing oil for polishing is a highly diluted form of Damar resin and Mati resin. Its main function is to restore the color luster that becomes gray due to oil absorption in the painting process, and it is a more useful coloring agent in the direct painting method, which can be prepared by itself. The finished resin glazing oil is double diluted with turpentine.
(5) waxy finishing oil and matte oil
Cream white paste polishing oil mixed with beeswax and thinner (generally mineral alcohol), thin and evenly applied or scratched on the screen, after drying for a few minutes, with a soft wipe cloth (pure silk is better) like polishing shoes wipe the surface, so that the picture becomes shiny and smooth. Because of its special use method, wax polish is suitable for hard supporting materials such as wood boards.
In addition to synthetic matte materials, artists also prepare matte oils by mixing beeswax dissolved in turpentine with damar varnish, where the amount of wax determines the degree of matte.
